San Francisco is one of the biggest cities and ports in the west of the USA. It is an important military base of the US which lies near the Pacific Ocean and a shipbuilding centre.
2.Cable cars are the famous vehicles of San Francisco. They were invented by Andrew S. Hallidie in the 19th century and continue to climb hills today.
3.There are two Bay Bridges: the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (1936) which connects Oakland with San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge (1937) . The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most famous and most beautiful bridges in the world. The steel towers on each side are 820 feet and are considered to be the highest of their kind in the world.
4.There are at least three small cities in San Francisco: “little Italy”, with its pizzerias and restaurants, “Chinatown”, with exotic food and wonderful Oriental shops, and “Japantown”
5.The population of San Francisco is only about 716 000, but it is the biggest business centre in the west of the USA
